Over 1,000 monitoring and data collection sites are deployed world wide. These measure ping times, data transfer rates and packet loss.
Internet performance has improved steadily over the years. TCP throughput rates from CERN (in Switzerland) to every region of the world are rising rapidly.
Packet loss rates from the US to various regions of the world have steadily improved over time
But, there is a huge digital divide. For example, packet loss rates from the US to Africa are notably higher than to Europe and Asia. Look back at the plots shown above and compare rich and poor nations.
