Telecommuter's LAN

A home or small office LAN can mix wireless and wired components and connect to the Internet. In this illustration, a wireless portable and wired desktop PC plug into an integrated gateway that plugs into a DSL or cable connection to the Internet.

Ethernet and WiFi standards lead to large production volumes. Large volumes justify the design and manufacture of custom chips resulting in small, low cost devices.

An integrated gateway containg the components inside the dashed line: a radio, switch, router and DHCP, NAT and Web servers, is about the size of a book.

The back of the gateway has plugs for the Internet connection and four wired PCs or other Ethernet devices and a power plug.

The two antennae are about 5 inches apart.
