Executing software from a flash drive

While we are not allowed to install software in the classrooms and labs, we may be able to execute portable versions from flash drives.

Christoph Neumann from our class recommended the site PortableApps.com, which acts as a clearing house for applications that have been converted for portable execution.

If you go there, you will find several programs which you can use in this class:

Filezilla, an FTP client
GIMP, a full-featured image processing program
Audacity, a full-featured audio editor
Thunderbird, an email client
Notepad++, a text editor

When you run the installers from PortableApps.com, don't forget to put the drive letter in front of the installation folder name. For example, if your flash drive is drive F, put F: at the start of the installation path.
GIMP: you can find online help for GIMP at http://docs.gimp.org/. You can optionally install the help files on your flash drive here.
I've never tried them, but two utilities for creating portable applications from installable software are Package factory and Total commander
