Setting Windows to display file extensions

In the file browser, Windows supresses the display of extensions of files of known file type (like ".doc" and ".xls") when it is first installed. You should change that setting to show the extensions.

To do so, open a file browser and use the menus:

Tools > Folder Options > View

and uncheck the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types".
