ASCII

The standard, 7-bit ASCII code for text dates back to 1967 when nearly all computer users spoke English. A 7-bit code gives only 128 unique characters. Unicode uses 16 bits and includes the character sets of many languages. (The ASCII codes comprise the first 128 characters of Unicode). The original ASCII code, shown here, is still widely used by text editors like Notepad and in applications like HTML and email.
