HTML illustration

This is a paragraph. It is an illustration of HTML, the hypertext markup language invented by Tim Berners-Lee. Note that this paragraph is on three lines in the source HTML document, but it is all run together when the client displays it. Why did Berners-Lee do it that way?

You can see that some tags have both a beginning and an end like parenthesis.
