Information destruction

This assignment will illustrate the intuitive notion of the amount of information in an image.

Download this image of my grandson Lucas. As you see, it is 561 by 599 pixels.

Resize the image, making its width 50 pixels. (Be sure to keep the aspect ratio constant).

1. How many pixels in the new, smaller image?

Resize the smaller image, returning its width to the original 561 pixels.

2. How many pixels in the new, enlarged imaged?

3. Was information lost when the size of the original image was reduced? What happened when the image size was reduced?

4. Was information created when the size of the small image was increased? What happened when the small image was enlarged?

Print a copy of the small image along with your answers to these four questions.
