The demonstration programs for this class were all written in VB.NET. In order to execute .NET programs, you must have the .NET runtime library installed on your PC. If you purchased your PC recently, it may have came with the .NET runtime pre-installed.
If you do not have it, you will get a "missing DLL" message when you try to run our sample programs. In that case, you have to install the .NET runtime. It is a free download, since Microsoft wants you and everyone else to be able to run .NET programs. (Be sure to read the requirements and instructions carefully to be sure you have compatible versions of Windows and Internet Explorer installed).
Installing the .NET runtime library will enable you to execute .NET programs (written in VB or any other language) on your computer, but, if you want to be able to write your own programs, you will need the Visual Studio.NET development system.
The bad news is that VS.NET is not available for free download from Microsoft. In fact, it costs over $1,000.
The good news is that as a CSUDH IS student, you are entitled to a free copy.
In order to run the VS.NET development system, you must have Windows 2000 or Windows XP. If you have an older operating system, and want to write VB.NET programs at home, you will have to upgrade.
Again, as a CSUDH IS student, you are entitled to a free Windows XP Professional upgrade. Once everyone who wishes to has upgraded to XP, we will begin distribution of VS.NET.
